Is a pre-purchase inspection worth it on a used car?

2 minute read · Checked October 2026 · Written at the Harkness counter, Coppervale, BC

The short answer

Yes, for almost any used car. Ours costs $118 flat and comes with a written report. In about an hour on the hoist we look for rust, leaks, worn brakes, tired tires and stored trouble codes. Even when the car checks out, you learn what it will need next, and that helps you settle on a fair price.

Is a pre-purchase inspection worth it on a used car?

Weigh $118 against what you are about to spend. A used car can look clean in a driveway and still need brakes, tires and a front end within the year. The inspection puts those costs on paper while you can still use them.

It matters most in a private sale. BC's Vehicle Sales Authority points out that a private buyer does without the consumer protection of a licensed dealer. If something goes wrong later, the buyer has to go through the courts. The authority's advice to private buyers is to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic first.

What do we check in that hour?

We start with a road test, ideally with a hill in it, since Coppervale has plenty. Then the car goes on the hoist. Winter brine and salt are hard on steel, so we spend real time underneath.

  • Frame, brake lines, fuel lines and exhaust, checked for rust.
  • Brake pads and rotors, measured.
  • Tire tread depth and the date code on each tire.
  • Steering and suspension parts, checked for play after gravel road kilometres.
  • Oil, coolant and transmission leaks.
  • A scan for stored trouble codes, plus a battery and charging test.

Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. You can see the format in our sample digital inspection report, where each line shows what we saw and why it matters.

What should I look up before I book the inspection?

A few checks cost little and save you a trip. The Vehicle Sales Authority suggests a vehicle history report that includes a lien check. It notes that a CARFAX Canada report offers a Canada-wide lien search, and that BC's Personal Property Registry covers liens registered in BC. Licensed dealers must guarantee their vehicles are free of liens, so this check matters most in a private sale.

Ask to see the seller's ID and match the name to the vehicle registration. Ask for service records too. A folder of oil change receipts tells you a lot about how the car was kept.

What if the report finds problems?

Nearly every used car has something on the list. What matters is the size of it. Worn wiper blades and a tired battery are easy to plan for. A leaking head gasket or a rusted frame is a different talk. If any line needs a price, ask, and we will write you an estimate for it. Then you can decide with real numbers. Book a bay for the inspection and tell us where the car is. The seller can drop it off, and you are welcome to come see it on the hoist.

Asked at the counter

Is a provincial safety inspection the same thing?

No. The Vehicle Sales Authority says a provincial safety inspection checks minimum safety standards and is no guarantee the vehicle is mechanically sound. A pre-purchase inspection looks at the whole car, including the engine, the leaks and what is wearing out next.

Do I need an inspection if I buy from a dealer?

It still helps. Licensed BC dealers must disclose some things in writing, such as damage that cost more than $2,000 to repair, or past use as a taxi or rental. An inspection adds the wear picture: brakes, tires, leaks and rust. Ask the dealer for a copy of their own inspection too.

What if the seller does not want the car inspected?

Most sellers expect the request, and many have been through it themselves. Offer to book a time that suits them. If a seller still says no, that is useful to know while you decide.

How long does the inspection take?

Plan on about an hour of shop time. Book a morning slot and we can usually walk you through the findings the same day. The written report with photos is yours to keep, whether you buy the car or not.
