Why does my car pull to one side?

2 minute read · Checked October 2026 · Written at the Harkness counter, Coppervale, BC

The short answer

A car that pulls to one side usually has one of three things going on. A tire is low or worn unevenly, the wheel alignment has been knocked out by a pothole or frost heave, or a brake is dragging. Check your tire pressures first, because that costs nothing. Then have the rest checked.

What should I check first when my car pulls to one side?

Start with tire pressure. Transport Canada notes that a tire can lose up to half its air pressure and still look fine. A soft tire drags its side of the car, and the car drifts toward it. Check all four with a gauge while the tires are cold. Fill them to the numbers on the tire information label, which is usually on the edge of the driver's door or the door frame.

Cold weather lowers every tire, by about 1 psi for every 5 degree drop in temperature. A tire that was a little low in October can be well down by the first minus twenty morning.

Then think about the road. Most paved roads have a slight crown so rain runs off to the sides. On a crowned road, many cars drift gently toward the shoulder. If the pull disappears on a flat, empty parking lot, the road may be the cause.

How does a pothole knock out the alignment?

Alignment is the set of angles that point your wheels straight ahead and keep them upright. A hard hit from a pothole, a curb or a frost heave can bend a part or shift those angles. Transport Canada lists a pull to one side as a sign the front end may be out of alignment. You may also notice the steering wheel sitting crooked while you drive straight.

Forest Service Road kilometres do the same thing slowly. Washboard and ruts work steering parts loose over a season. A worn tie rod end or control arm bushing lets the wheel wander, and an alignment will only hold once that part is replaced.

Why does it only pull when I brake?

A pull that shows up when you press the brake usually points to the brakes themselves. One caliper may be sticking, so that wheel grabs harder or keeps dragging after you let off. Winter brine and road salt are hard on the sliding parts of a caliper. A brake hose that has collapsed inside can do it too.

A dragging brake makes heat, and you may smell hot brakes at that wheel after a drive. A pull under braking is a safety problem. Get it checked before your next highway trip.

What does it cost to fix a pull?

Our order is road test first, then the numbers, then the estimate. A four-wheel alignment starts from $129, and you get a printout of the before and after numbers. If the pull comes from a worn steering or suspension part, that work starts from $145. A sticking caliper is priced once we know the vehicle and the part.

See the pulls to one side line on our symptom estimator for the starting price, and read when you need a wheel alignment for the signs to watch. Then book a bay for a road test and tell us which way it pulls.

Asked at the counter

Will new tires fix a pull?

Only if a tire was the cause. New tires on a car with the alignment out will pull too, and they start wearing unevenly from the first week. It is worth checking the alignment whenever you buy a new set, so they start their life rolling straight.

Is a slight drift normal?

A gentle drift toward the shoulder on a crowned road is common. A pull you have to hold against with steady pressure is something else. So is a drift that started after a hard hit, or one that goes the same way on a flat lot.

Why is my steering wheel crooked when I drive straight?

The steering wheel sits crooked when it and the front wheels are no longer lined up. It often happens after a pothole, a curb, or a new steering part. An alignment centres it again. If it went crooked suddenly after a hit, have the steering parts checked as well.

How long does an alignment take?

Most alignments take one to one and a half hours on our rack. If a seized adjuster or a worn part needs work first, we call you with the price before we go further. You get the before and after numbers on paper either way.
